Art for Arthur Street Hotel is a permanent installation of artworks in a local hotel-style transitional housing service for unhoused people. The project seeks to cultivate a positive environment of artistic stimulation for residents—one that offers moments of reflection, recognition, and warmth within their daily surroundings.

The works are thematically connected through the principle of mutual aid: the practice of people supporting one another through community-led systems of care. Mutual aid, unlike charity, is non-hierarchical and decentralized, working in a horizontal (or rhizomic) power structure in which all participants benefit from the betterment of the community. It can be as complex as a housing facility that provides wraparound support, or as simple as saying: “You have a wound, I have a bandage.”

The artists included in this installation were selected with consideration for both their artistic practices and their lived experiences. This project prioritizes artists who maintain meaningful connections to issues such as homelessness, food insecurity, and the medical or social challenges associated with low income—whether through firsthand experience or through sustained, care-centered community engagement. Brought together in this shared space, artists from a wide range of personal histories are united by an ethic of care, emphasizing connection, dignity, and person-to-person solidarity.
